I read Matt's RS article and the mention of crack head behavior and Wall St. seems spot on. In addition, the 'toxic asset' plan from Geithner seems strikingly familiar to what got us in this mess in the first place:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nay4VbUJl3E

Regretably, history has shown us that when the middle class have their backs to the wall, they invariably jump to the right. Reading through the comments from the Mail readers below the article only serves to confirm that gloomy prognosis. In the interests of research - and also self preservation - I've spent the last few months looking at readers comments on articles about the slump in rags like the Mail and Telegraph and believe me, it makes for some scary reading.

Those who are uncritically looking forward to a 'summer of rage' in the UK need to be careful about what they wish for. I fear they will get something they hadn't bargained for - a tidal wave of reaction as the middle class sees its world crumble away and they look for scapegoats. The only political movement that looks to benefit from this rage are slime such as the BNP.

Don't get me wrong, I'm as angry as hell at the terrible damage this government with its slavish devotion to the defence of corporate interests and neo-liberalism and its intrusive authoritarianism has done to ordinary people in this country. I for one would love to make the bastards pay for it, dearly. But above all, I want to do this so that the current political and economic order is replaced with one that is considerably more just and progressive. The problem is that progressive alternatives in UK politics are few and far between - at the moment, its the forces of reaction that are winning the day. That frightens the life out of me.

Just as frightening is the prospect of the disorder that could well result from the 'summer of rage' giving the government the excuse they have been waiting for to enact the Civil Contingcies Act, declare a state of emergency and effectively install a totalitarian regime.

I think protests and unrest are pretty much inevitable this year given the anger from ordinary people right across the political spectrum at what is happening.

What is going to be difficult to predict is how all of this is going to play out. I will venture to say that the coming wave of unrest will be very different to anything we have experienced before. This will partly be down to the more seasoned protesters having learnt some lessons from the past and re-thinking their tactics. A lot of the difference will be the sheer number of people who have never been on any kind of protest before but who are so angry at what is going on, feel they have no alternative.

Demos and marches will certainly feature but other actions such as tax strikes are certainly on the cards. Also, taking a cue from the US, there may well start to be some incidents of resistence to home repossessions with friends, neighbours and sympathisers mobilised to block the path of the bailiffs.

Whether theese protests have a progressive or reactionary character and outcome remains to be seen. Given the level of anger that exists, there will be few, ideologically pure and sound movements to latch onto. It will be a mess with the participants having varied and often contradictory motives for joining in. Those of us with progressive leanings will have to work with what we see in front of us and hope that we win the day...

An interesting story and one I've been following for a while. The implications are potentially devastating for the US and would represent a major historical shift. It certainly poses a question mark over the ability of the US to continue acting like (or should I say prentending to be) a major superpower... What this would do for international relations is anyone's guess as there would inevitably be some competetion to replace the US as a leading power...even though the competitors are also in deep trouble economically, socially and politically...

What is interesting is how very little of this makes its way into the mainstream UK media. It's only through my own efforts searching around the Net for more informed commentaries about the economic crisis that the situation within the US has flagged up on my radar. You do have to wonder why stuff like this is being kept under wraps in the UK media...

Spain can withstand the downturn better than any other european country as recent as 1982, when unemployment was 20%. Spain had just come out of a dictatorship. These events (only 30 yrs ago) are still fresh in peoples memories, so they will be able to come out of it.

Thanks

An article that in my opinion, is absolutely spot on...particularly in its analysis of the corporatised media that has a firm chokehold on the truth. With the recent wave of wildcat strikes here in the UK, there has been some raising of awareness as to how deeply in trouble we are. Some raising...but not nearly enough to prevent what is going to be a massive shock for many people when things really do start to unravel and the harsh realisation that the party is well and truly over finally comes home...
